Hey everyone!
I’m Jen, a sophomore New Media major here at Purchase College. I am currently working as an Admissions Ambassador, Residential Assistant and a Writing Tutor at the Learning Center, so if you have any questions about that stuff, feel free to contact me.
So, this is my first blog on this Ambassador Blog. Last semester I took a course called Computer and Culture; one of the many topics covered was how blogging is affecting our community. We had to create a blog and then write blog entries about our assigned reading, on campus events, and other things we felt were relevant to the class. I cannot believe how much I learned in the class, it was a ton of work, but SO worth it. I highly recommend it. Another great part of that class was that we played the online role playing game ‘World of Warcraft’. At first when I found out that we would be playing it I was quite surprised, but it really open my eyes as to the culture and social aspects within the game. It was a great accompaniment to the class; not only was it fun to play (I had never played a game like that before) but it helped facilitate forming bonds with my classmates as we played outside of class and assisted each other in game. The game served as evidence to support main issues discussed in the class.
So my midterms are finally over! YAYAYYA but now I have to really get to work on my Advanced Standing portfolio. As a New Media major sophomore, I have to prepare an online portfolio to display the work I have created as a NM major thus far. It’s really important that I do well, since it determines if you are allowed to continue in the major; it weeds out the weak. Although intimidating, I feel that the Advanced Standing portfolio review is a necessary part of the major. Not only does it force you to create a portfolio you may otherwise have not created, it ensures the level of commitment students have to the major. So yeah, you are supposed to work on it for the first half of the semester you take ‘Advanced Standing’, but I didn’t really start mine until yesterday. So yeah I’m freaking out since it is due the day after spring break (the 23rd). So I guess I should go work on that now.
Best wishes,
Jen

Hey guys,
So I literally just took two exams…. If you ever get a chance to take a Post Colonial American History course, you definitely should! The course I’m taking right now started out at the end of the American Revolution in 1776, and goes right through to the American Civil War in the 1860’s…. Fascinating, right?
Anyways, stress… Stress is something that all students develop. Whether it’s during exams or tennis season… it is going to happen. The most friendly piece of advice I could offer would be to take a step back, take a break (go to the gym for an hour or so) and then re-approach what you are studying. You will feel so much more relaxed now that you have time to distress as I like to say, rather than studying four hours with no breaks.
That’s all about stress…… So now I want to share a little story with you about my day. Today, in my last class, my history professor took us to listen to a guest lecturer speak about “Soul Food” and it’s influence on American inhabitants. Can you imagine the drastic impact African food has had on America, before and after the antebellum period? Neither can I, but what astounded me was the motivation and enthusiasm this professor brought with him. I mean, he just was so excited talking about how food influenced American cultural values, shapping identiy and so forth. I was particularly exicted for the history club who sponsored the event. Although I am a member, I have not had the time to attend the past couple of meetings due to a demanding tennis season.
Anyways, it’s been a really tough week, studying for mid terms and all, and I am about to collapse. But I am definitely looking foward to a relaxing birthday weekend….. My girlfriend just arrived (hopefully to spoil me this weekend) and is studying at our friendly campus Starbucks while I sit here and blog away. Furthermore, on Sunday, my family is coming to spend the day with me which I am particularly thrilled about.
So, until we meet again,
The one and only
Matti

Anyways, so far Purchase has been a dream come true. The opportunities at a small liberal arts college are never ending. Make sure to check out my blog to keep up to date with life at PURCHASE!!!
Well, that’ s all for now folks. See ya soon!!!

Happy March! It certainly came in like a lion and gave us a snow day!
This semester is steamrolling by. In a couple of weeks I’ll be on Spring Break in Florida for preseason baseball. We’ll be just outside of Orlando for five days. I can’t wait for the warmth! I’m ready to get outside and play rather than continuously practicing in the gym because of snow. “Global warming!! Where are you!!!”
Other sport news is that the women’s swim team came in first in the conference! They dismantled the competition!
Today is a really cool day because it’s 1st Wednesday at the Neuberger Museum! I’m on a programming committee for the museum and our event is “Factory Night” which is inspired by Andy Warhol’s “Pop Politics” exhibit. It’s a dress-up event from 5-9pm with a live band, food, and prizes. Take a stop by!
Classes are moving along nicely and my main focus now is the Senior Project. I’m now more determined than ever to complete it since some graduate schools have answered back! I recently agreed to give a presentation next month with some of the other natural sciences majors. Speaking in public is exciting for me so i’m not stressin’.
Make sure to check out the other students blogs to see what they’re up to!
Until next time

Just before break we had a sweet event at the gym called “Panther Madness!” It was a nice introduction to the winter sports which we created through SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). Each team ran out onto the basketball court and were introduced by our SID (Sports Information Director). The women’s swimming team (who are crushing the competition right now) held a relay race where they picked audience members to participate. I was picked! I had to put on a life vest, goggles, flippers, and hold a piece of styrafoam between my legs then run across the gym! It was more of a waddle than a run : / Women’s basketball had a 3-point shoot-out against the crowd and the men’s basketball team had a slam-dunk contest! Those guys can fly. They were breaking out some 360’s, backwards slam dunks, and one kid even blindfolded himself! Once the teams were finished the band “Under the Rasta Influence” began to perform. It definitely was a success!
Another event was “Election Confessions” at the Neuberger Museum on campus. I’m on a programming committe which put it all together! In one of the studies we taped students reactions about the elections and then projected them to the main lobby. We had almost 20 students talk! For some, it was there first time voting ever! Students spoke about their reasoning behind voting for each candidate which was enlightening. Also in the lobby we had a looping video of the election night and students first reactions. There were also some students who performed live inbetween the confessions who were amazing as always.
Today I get to present a mock lesson for my Intro to Teaching Science class. Wish me luck!
Hope everybody had a nice Turkey Day!
Let’s get ready for Pancake Madness!!! Check back soon!
