Study Abroad in Mexico City

March 6th, 2009

We get lots of email digests about campus goings on here and the latest batch included this exciting tid-bit about a new Study Abroad opportunity.  John Gitlitz, Associate Professor of Political Science, recently made a campus-wide email announcement about new opportunities available for liberal arts students to work as Research Assistants to Social Science faculty at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, one of the most exciting, historic, and culturally rich cities south of the border.

The variety of research projects for students to work on include:

1.     Media agendas: television coverage of the 2009 Mexican election campaign

2.     Government social policy as seen through the eyes of the poor

3.     “Shared-development” as a policy approach to international migration: Mexican migration policies in comparative perspective.

4.     Implementing U.N. peacekeeping: institutional factors affecting the success or failure of U.N. missions

5.     Constructing “Cultural Diplomacy”: the role of Mexican cultural attaches abroad

6.     Political Science Senior Seminar (field research on assorted topics chosen by students at the Iberoamericana).

I think it’s a good example of what maybe sets Purchase Study Abroad apart from others. It’s the level of intensity, the focus on particular research topics or creative projects, and the depth of study that our students get into when they go abroad with us.

Universidad Iberoamericana also participates in a successful student exchange program with our School of Art+Design. You can learn more about our partnership with Universidad Iberoamericana here. Talk to you again soon!
