“Closing Time”

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Hey guys,

Are you looking foward to laying on the beach, reading a book, spending time with family, and just eating home-cooked food? I know I definitely am! There are only a few more weeks of the semester left, and yet, all I can think about is the summer…. My plans for the summer are to work at the Windsor Connecticut Historical Society where I will be interning with the Education department. I am really excited about creating new lesson plans for the children’s historical museaum! Last summer I did something similar at a camp in New York and really enjoyed the experience!

Then, from May 24-27, I am participating in the NCAA Student Athlete Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. I am really excited about representing Purchase College and meeting new Student Athlete’s from all over the country.

Lastly, I intend to go visit my sister who just got settled in Chicago. I am really excited to see one of her performances in Second City’s conservatory program.

So enough about me. What are your summer plans?

Zombie prom and Purchase Prom

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Hey it’s Jen!

Awhile ago i mentioned Zombie Prom. This event took place a few weekends ago here at Purchase. It was really great. My boyfriend, his roomie and I all went to the Salvation Army in Portchester the day before, and of course ran into many other Purchase students looking for a potential zombie outfit. I didn’t end up getting anything, instead i cut up some old cloths I had in my room. While in Portchester we also stopped at the Stop and Shop to buy all the ingredients to make fake blood.
I got ready with my friends in their apartment in the New and then went to the OLD to another apartment to get ready with even more people. It is surprisingly fun putting on tons of makeup to make you look like a zombie. After we were ready we went to the Student Center (Stood). There was a freak show going on there. After that there were tons of awesome bands. The night ended with Skeleton Breath and all the zombie students rocking out.
Then this weekend was Purchase Prom, which was girl’s night for me. This year the theme was classy or trashy, so there was a mix of super classy outfits and super trashy ones. My friend Anna who goes to Mt. St. Mary’s upstate came down for the event and we got ready in my room together along with my friends Tori and Melyssah. I love getting gall dolled up. We all went as classy girls, although it was tempting to make a super trashy outfit. The dinner and jazz band were on form 8-10 and then 10-12 was a DJ. This event was in the upper lobby of the Performing Arts Center so it was super nice. We all had SO much fun dancing, there were a lot more people there this year then there were last year.
This coming weekend is Culture Shock, which is a huge music festival that is going on this Friday and Saturday with bands and carnival rides. The artists playing this Culture Shock are:

Finals time.

Well, for most. For film students—more specifically, film sophomore students who are Admissions Ambassadors AND Resident Assistants—-it’s the most work intensive part of existence. The breakdown is as follows: all year (scholastically) we have projects due, one about every other week. Our main classes are documentary and director’s scene workshop, I.E., a non-fiction course and a fiction course. This obviously does not include our film history courses or gen-eds that have their own share of work associated with them. Okay. So, SECOND semester, we also take an extra cinematography class and a writing class. What I’m building up to as kind of an anti-climatic end is this: I have TWO final films to do (one for doc, one for director’s scene… both representing the culmination of the year, and thus, expected to be the best films I’ve made this year) AND an interpretation of a portrait on 16mm film for cinematography AND a script for my writing class that’s expected to be my junior thesis film AND a ten page paper on feminism through film. Phewww. ANNNDDD of course, the occasional tours and RA responsibilities that happen in between….

AND ALL BETWEEN NOW AND MAY.

So feel bad fellow patrons, empathize with me!! I’m kidding of course… it was just a little humor joke. But don’t take your free time, even your boredom, for granted. There are starving third-world children and stressed-out first-world film students who would love to have that boredom.

Anyways, I’m breaking up the tedium on Friday… going to see mewithoutYou and Brand New play for free ‘cause one of my best friend plays in the band. Perks of being a Purchase student: you’re ultra-cool like that.

So I suppose the moral of my story is this: if you’re an art student, and you like getting art opportunities as well as having art rule your life, sleep habits, circle of friends, and general outlook on life, come to Purchase.

Springtime at Purchase!!

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Hey everyone, it’s Jen,

So in my last post I wrote about how I needed to create my Advanced Standing project for New Media. Since then I have finished my project and have passed! Here is the link to my website if you want to check out what an advanced standing portfolio looks like: http://newmedia.purchase.edu/~jurbanow/portfolio/Home%20Page.html I’m super excited that I passed so now I can stay in the major I love so much.

So it is springtime at Purchase! This is my favorite time of year. Yesterday the quad was filled with people on laying on blankets, students throwing Frisbees, playing soccer and a variety of other sports. There was music playing and students reading and socializing; it was awesome to see everyone so happy to be soaking up the sun. Unfortunately for me I didn’t get to lounge around since I had a video to edit, but there will be many other lovely spring days.

Tonight I have my on-campus Internship at PTV (Purchase Television) to go to. As a live tech intern I earn two upper level credits to tech two shows a week and go to the weekly meeting (about 5 hours a week). After our weekly meeting, I tech the live show “Last Call with Dennis OBrien”. I also tech the new hit show “Lets Talk About Sex” which is put on by the Alternative Clinic ever other Wednesday at 7pm. This show has gotten tons of positive feedback. The topics they have discussed so far are ‘everything they should have taught you in health class’, ‘DIY sex toys’ and ‘the truth about STIs’.  I love this internship, the people are so great to work with and it is lots of fun teching the crazy live shows or even the more serious ones PTV hosts. I think that next semester I will intern with PTV, but work more on making adds and using Final Cut Pro than teching live shows, simply because I want to learn as much as possible.

Before I go to my internship, I am going to be helping my friend Temi work on our PTV add for an RA event the FYE RAs are putting on called Quad Wars. It’s like a field day event in the quad, with competitions, events, music, etc. It should be really fun. Since Temi and I are on the advertising committee, we need to make an commercial for it that will be aired on PTV.

Finally, I am looking forward to Zombie Prom which is Friday night. I plant to go to my friend’s apartment with lots of my other friends so we can get dressed up in our zombie garb together. I am SO EXCITED!!! This event is held at the Stood, since there is live music.

The Grind

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

The last month of school is going to be a grind.  Although midterms have come and gone plenty of work has to be done.  My senior project needs to be completed, get ready for more exams, tutor, work, and baseball.  I hope there’s some time I can squeeze in for myself!

This past Saturday was a very memorable day.  We honored Mr. Salter who had passed away in the Fall.  He was Bill Guerrero’s first assistant baseball coach.  We all wore patches on our left sleeve to remember him. His wife threw out the ceremonial first pitch. I was behind home plate waiting for her throw. She released and….STRIKE!  I attached a link to a write up and picture of the day.

This upcoming weekend is set to be the most important one of the season. These games represent playoffs. For the first time in Purchase baseball history we can be in it. We play Maritime on Saturday and Yeshiva on Sunday, both days at home at 12pm. I’ll be pitching the second game on Saturday which should start around 3pm. Come check us out! Wish us luck.

Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.
